A SOCIETY THAT SINGS: From Tudors to Romantics

MAIN TITLE (SPR 2014) (640x586)

Madrigals, in England and elsewhere, relied on a somewhat novel concept – that individuals with musical ability, professional or not, could gather together, and with the printed music, create their own performances.  While most art music, like dance suites, operas, and church music, requires a formal performance, madrigals are much more flexible. Voices and instrument parts can be swapped freely. Singers can gather in small or larger groups to practice and sing them. And ultimately, the community that is created in less formal environments allows the music to serve as more than an art form – it builds a community.
